With the chronic ammo/reloading component crisis showing no signs of abating it appears that Airguns may deserve a look to help keep shooting skills sharp. There are a great variety of airguns available and in different configurations and price points. In the UK where firearms are virtually outlawed for citizens, Airguns have quite a following (airguns also are strictly regulated in the UK and some states/localities in the US).
There are some advantages--namely that air is free and not taxed (at least for now -- LOL) and pellets are readily available.
Airguns have been around for centuries-- Lewis and Clark had airguns in their kit during their great Corps of Discovery Expedition of 1804-1806.
Modern airguns come in a variety of configurations price points and calibers. The most common is .177 and there are other calibers, .22, .25, .30 all the way up to .50. The larger caliber air rifles have enough power where they can be used for hunting small and medium sized game.
TYPES:
Spring Piston:
Compressed Gas (CO2)
High Pressure Air
Gas spring
Pump Pneumatic
Pre Charged Pneumatic (PCP)
The popular types are the spring piston which requires cocking the piece at a hinge in the barrel which charges the piston. The CO2 compressed gas guns use a replaceable cylinder of C02 gas which propel the pellet and they have the lowest price point. The PCP guns have the highest price points and they use a reservoir container of high pressure air to propel the pellet. The PCP guns are refilled with a specialized hand pump or a high pressure compressor. Some also use a SCBA tank to refill the air reservoir. The PCP rifles and pistols are used in World Cup and Olympic competitions.
