So this week I am fishing the North Platte river in the wildreness area near Six Mile Gap. I hiked downstream four miles at daybreak, I usually have the trail to myself but this morning I am running parallel to a fat old black bear. We get along for a few hundred yards before he decides he doesn't like me and he takes off up the hill. That was nice of him.. Then a few hours later I am standing midstream waist deep flipping my fly to some finicky trout. I hear voices and finally look up to see two kayaks heading my way. Now I am used to canoes, rafts, kayaks, people in inner tubes floating right on through. These guys stop about 200 yards upstream, portage around me, to a point a hundred yards downstream, hop back, in their kayaks, give a courteous wave and off they went. I was shocked, never have I ever had anyone show such courtesy. I hope these guys had a safe trip and had a great time. These days being the recipient of such outdoor courtesy is rare indeed.
