.22 Rimfire is a separate competitive division in the sport of NRA Action Pistol. Using a .22 is a low cost way to participate and enjoy Action Pistol-- build handgun skill and shoot confidence building scores. -- many people ask me what is a good .22 pistol and holster combination.
IMO the best pistol to use is any of the Ruger Mark series. There are other .22's that can be used but none as versatile as the Ruger Mark Series. Want to make the trigger smoother and lighter? Check. Want to change the barrel? Check. Want to easily mount a red dot sight or any other type of optical sight on it? Check. Are magazines plentiful and available? Check.
What about a holster? Brownells sells an excellent .22 holster made for Ruger Mark Series at a reasonable price. Manufacturer is Tactical Solutions LLC --Its dropped and offset which allows for a safe and speedy draw, and its cut out to allow the use of optics.

The revolver is also an excellent choice. Since most Action Pistol shooting problems are solved with no more than six rounds at a time the revolver fits in just fine. IMO the best .22 revolver to use would be a Smith & Wesson. Smith makes many variants of .22 rimfires-- I'd stick with their excellent "K" frame revolvers and a six inch barrel. The 6 inch tube gives a longer "sight radius" which is more forgiving of error at longer ranges. Same thing applies to S&W as the Ruger mark series--versatility. And a good holster can be found through Blade Tech.

I picked up a Ruger 22/45 on Adr's advice and couldn't be happier with it. I got the the one with a threaded barrel (hope to put a suppressor on it someday), put a cheap red dot on it and changed out the sear with a Volquartsen Custom. This gun is so much fun to shoot.
I originally got the Ruger so my wife would have an fun and easy gun to shoot and as a way to get her to start shooting some of the competitions.
As a side note, I hope to someday pick up a K frame .22. They look like a blast to shoot.

Don't forget about the Browning Buck Mark. Great pistol for the price.

Smith and Wesson introducing a new .22 pistol. "Victory" .22 has some attractive features, supposedly it has a trigger design similar to the famed Model-41 which is a good thing--the M41 trigger is revered by many. Also the design is easy to take down for cleaning--unlike the Ruger Mark series in which I need three hands to reassemble! Along with the Ruger Mark series, and the Browning Buckmark this new S&W is ideal for NRA Action Pistol, Steel Challenge etc. Don't know if a holster is available for it yet but I'm sure somebody is working on it. www.smith-wesson.com/webapp/wcs/stores/servlet/Category4_750001_750051_804153_-1_757752_757751_image

Watched the promo ad, nice looking little gun. They covered the frustration with the takedown of Ruger .22 pistols well, should help sales. Anxious to see one, as well as some of the after market add-ons that are sure to follow. Now all the industry needs to do is saturate the market with .22 ammo.
