I competed in the 2016 "Crawfish Cup" NRA Action Pistol Regional Championship over the weekend in Lake Charles, Louisiana. Crawfish Cup is a warmup to the NRA Bianchi Cup National Championship and it attracts the best shooters in the sport. The match was held at the Southwest Louisiana Rifle and Pistol Club. This club is outfitted with Bianchi Cup target equipment with a "rail" moving target system, Falling Plate Racks with locking bars and Turning Target systems for the Practical and Barricade events. The Title Sponsor for this match was Midsouth Shooters Supply and there was a huge prize table with Dillon Reloading Machines, Leupold Rifle Scopes, Bulk Bullets, Reloading Tools and Cleaning Equipment.
Over 80 pro, amateur and military shooters competed in this match with Bruce Piatt finishing 1st overall with a "clean" 1920 and 176 X's. 1st place Metallic was Patrick Franks from the US Army's Marksmanship Unit (AMU) with a 1884-127X, 1st place Production was Adam Sokolowski of the AMU shooting a Springfield XD 5.25 9mm posting an outstanding 1896-138X. The AMU shooters told me that they enjoyed shooting at Otto Rd Range last summer for the Steamboat Challenge NRA Action Pistol Regional and they are looking forward to coming back to Cheyenne in August for the big match.
I finished "above the fold" as they say-- in the top half of the competitors. I had problems with "skidders" on the turning targets which are scored as late shot misses. Lost about 40 points on those alone. On the mover I didn't have any dreaded 5's but I managed to shoot fourteen 8's and that dragged my score down. My best event was the Falling Plates leaving only one plate standing at the 20 yard line. All in all not too bad considering the talent level of shooters and hot and humid weather conditions.
The Lake Charles area offers great fishing and there are several big gambling casinos there. Good cajun cooking too--I had some Crawfish Ettoufee a real treat that I can't get in Cheyenne LOL.
