TAGO = The Average Gun Owner We've all seen how hard it is to get casual gun owners out to a match to improve their skill and ability to safely handle a firearm. Here's an interesting article about a CCW class. revolverguy.com/tago/

One of the commenters hit the nail on the head for me. At my first CCW test in Texas nearly 10 years ago, the lady next to me passed the shooting portion (mikes and all...) and admitted it was only her 2nd time to shoot a handgun. I long battled the idea that someone so unproficient should be carrying in public, but alas, it isn't my place to say, and I could only hope she saw the same thing I did and sought more training. My mother took her Texas CCW test a few years ago, passed, and I dont think she has shot since. I believe the "pattern" (not a group) she had on paper was humbling and she hasn't gotten over it.

The one the author misses is the husband or boyfriend who brings his honey to the range for some instruction. In fact the husband or boyfriend are not in a position to be an instructor in the first place. How many times has a magnum of some type been put in a woman’s hand so she can experience how “powerful” it is. Wonder how many of those women advance. My wife tells me the story of her brothers taking her hunting as a teenager and putting a 12 ga in her hands knowing it will kick her like a mule and having a good laugh at her expense. No wonder she has no desire to hunt. I cringe when new folks show at a match, not a environment to teach, but they took the step and I sure don’t want them having a bad experience. I always try to keep new shooters in my group spending the extra time trying real hard to teach and foster a desire in them to learn, come back and advance. I have purchased holsters and belts for some and offered to have them out to the range for practice without pressure. I am thankful that we have shooters at our matches that make people feel welcome and that take the extra time to share and see a bit of themselves in new shooters. Thanks rbglock for posting.
