Can small pistol magnum primers be substituted for regular small pistol primers?

I have used large magnum rifle primers in standard loads and have used large magnum pistol primers in standard loads. These were not max loads in either. I did do some chrono and accuracy testing with the rifle primers and found no real difference. What are you going to load them in?

I've substituted magnum primers in lieu of standard primers in .38 Special standard velocity handgun loads. The main difference I saw was the magnums are harder primers which means I got some "clickers" when shooting through a revolver with a light double action say 7 to 8 lbs.
The magnum caps do have a higher "brisance" ( a French word describing the shattering effect of explosives) over the standard caps which is why they are used to more efficiently ignite cartridges loaded near max or at max with slow burning high density handgun powders like H-110, W-296.
That said when substituting the magnum caps over standard I do exercise due diligence and REDUCE my .38 Special loads by 10% when using magnum caps.
