I appreciate everyone's response on my posts. I've been getting a lot of useful info. My question today is what ammo to use for training and competition. Unfortunately I am not reloading yet. Any recommendations on ammo? Looking for something reliable for competition, yet economical enough to purchase by the case. Also any good vendors you can recommend would be awesome. Thanks

Well if you will primarily be shooting Defensive pistol,IDPA and Action pistol just about any ammo you can get will be OK. You are looking at 8" bulls for the most part at primarily distances of 5 to 25 yards. The two stages in AP of 35 and 50 yards ammo could make a difference but initially it will not be that big a deal. So if I was buying ammo I would look for the bulk packs anywhere I could get them at the best price. Then if I knew I was going to be shooting a bunch I would not hesitate to get going on reloading. So good luck, I am reloader and cannot remember the last time I bought made to shoot ammo. No doubt someone on here who buys will give you the skinny. Good luck, hope to see you at our defensive and action pistol shoots.

I just shoot whatever I can get cheap when I don't have anything reloaded.
Today I patterned some cheap Blazer 9mm at 25 yards from a Glock 19 using a rest. All my shots were within a 3" x 3" group. I also did some prone shooting at 50 yards and I was able to put almost all of the shots in a 8" circle. So I wouldn't worry about picking a certain brand.
I would personally just get whatever is the cheapest.

I agree most factory made 9mm cartridges will shoot well. The bullet is the key component followed by the primer. Even cheap Russian Wolf brand appears to shoot OK.
Try different brands and bullet weights and see which one shoots best. Minimum distance for an accuracy test is 25 yards. I prefer testing ammo at 50 yards on an NRA Action Pistol tombstone target which has a black 4 inch X ring and the 10 ring is 8 inches in diameter.
A out of the box pure stock Production 9mm pistol should hold the ten ring at 50 yards with quality ammo. The better ones will hold the X-ring at 50 yards and they are keepers!
I like a "soft" shooting pistol --and for me the 9mm loaded with 147 grain bullet at 850 to 900 FPS is pleasant to shoot and very accurate at 50 yds. IIRC Federal makes factory 147 grain FMJ ammo and it shoots great. The trade off though is on the Moving Target Event in NRA Action Pistol. With that load at 25 yards on the mover the shooter needs to hold two full inches off the edge of the target. Most 9mm shooters want more speed --at least 1000 FPS that way they can hold on the edge of the target at 25 yards.
