Running Boar is a great opportunity to test and refine your rifle skills on a moving target. Running Target events were a part of Olympic shooting programs from 1900 until the last event that remained—10-meter Running Target—was eliminated after the Athens 2004 Games.
The Running Boar event is a precision match, calling for the rifle-shooting techniques of careful and precise aiming and good trigger control. These things must be done quickly and while the target is moving, but—make no mistake—the running boar match calls for precise shooting.
Procedure Right to Left: The shooter will stand at the 25 meter (82 feet) line. The RO will command “load and make ready”. The shooter will stand at a ready position with the rifle butt at belt level and muzzle pointed downrange and finger off the trigger. The shooter will observe the right side barricade and command “Ready”. The Running Boar Target will appear from the right barricade and run 60 feet at 12 feet per second (5 seconds exposure time). The shooter will shoulder his/her rifle aim and fire one (1) round on the target before it disappears behind the left side barricade. The running boar target will then be run back to the right side and the shooter will repeat the procedure. Total of ten (10) shots fired on the Running Boar target from right to left direction. Shooter will unload and show clear, ground rifle on table. RO will then go downrange and change target out and bring target back for scoring
Procedure Left To Right: Same as R to L procedure above except boar target will start at left side barricade.
Penalties: Any shot fired before the target appears from the barricade is a disqualification. Any late shot fired into the barricade is a disqualification.
Calculating the LEAD: Formula is: Distance to the target in feet divided by the velocity of the bullet times the speed of target (in feet per second) times 12 (to convert feet into inches)
Example: Distance to target is 82 feet. Divided by velocity of bullet example of 2,800 FPS, X 12 feet per second (speed of target) X 12 (to convert feet into inches).
82 /2800 X 12 X 12 = 4.21 inches of lead.
