I know that if you reload 45 ACP and as I do scrounge for once fired brass then you discovered that federal uses in some of their brass, small pistol primers
Well In an effort to satisfy my curiosity about why Federal decided to use some small primers in some of their 45 ACP cartridges.I have heard many different explanations ( some were Pure BS) but none had anything to back them up so went to the Federal site and asked.
Here is my question to the Federal tech department and their answer.
ME
can you tell me what the rationale behind using both small pistol primers and / or large pistol primers in your 45 ACP cartridges.
FEDERAL
In effect to produce a more economical round we choose to use small pistol primer in some of our target loads. We were able to develop a load with the same performance as with a large pistol primer. Our Champion line of target loads use small pistol, if you like we still use large pistol primers in our American Eagle, Gold Medal, Tactical, Personal Defense, and other Premium lines.
Thanks
Federal Cartridge

Bottom line is usually a factor in a decision such as this. When you figure a company that produces millions of rounds can save .02/round, that adds up over the long run. On 10 million rounds they save $200,000. As far as what it does for those of us who scrounge brass, it stinks. The first time I found a small primed case was when I squashed a primer trying to get it seated not knowing it was such a case. Now they just go into my discarded brass bucket. I guess if a guy sorted through his brass he could reload a target load just as easily as Federal does it but why bother, the cost difference of primers for a reloader would be inconsequential. Unless of course you shoot several million rounds a year.

I did a little researce and found that some are saying 45 ACP small primers are producing higher velocities and better accuracy personaly have not loaded any but am interested in trying them out.

I have a bunch that I have acquired over the years, I load them, use them, and repeat the process. They use the same loads as the lg primers. If anyone has some and doesn't want to use them I do accept donations
