Hey guys, I need to get a holster for my gun to shoot the defensive pistol matches. I don't know the first thing about holsters.... So if anyone wants to give the full rundown, that would be great.
I also have two different guns I could shoot. HK vp9 and a Springfield xd45, any opinions on which one I should start out with.
Also, what else do I need? Magazines obviously, how many? Do I need mag holders? Cool Glasses? I see lots of guys on TV with cool glasses.... jerseys? I really want a jersey! Just kidding........... kind of.
Anyway, in all seriousness, I really just need the basics. Any help is appreciated. Thanks!

If you are looking for a single purpose holster for the defensive shoots, Bladetech are hard to beat. You should have at least four magazines because the guy who makes up these stages sometimes likes push things at bit. I am a bad one to say anything about magazine holders since I carry mine in my pockets. I am also partial to .45 acp but either of your guns are fine. Cool glasses and jerseys,I can't help you with those. Doesn't seem like I helped much but Imam, sure someone else will jump in here.

For competition, Bladetech is a really solid choice. I currently use one now and like it. I prefer the dropped offset with the tec-lok loop. The dropped offset allows me to get a solid grip without having to jam my shoulder up into my ear when drawing. They're also like $60 from Midway.
For mag pouches, if you are not using a competition belt then I like the read tactical offset mag pouches. They're cheap ($23), are easy on and off, allow for a good grip on the magazine, and can be used for just about any double stack mag. They are available at Wayofthegun.us
I would recommend at least 5 mags. That way if you want you can play in other games like steel challenge, NRA Action pistol, or USPSA.
I like shooting 9mm over 45 but platform wise I would pick the XD over the HK. I also think that HK mags are stupidly expensive.
And most importantly of all, you definitely have to have a jersey and all the cool shooters where red lenses, not gray or yellow, but red....

I like HSGI Taco mag pouches, they'll take ANY pistol mags. I can carry 2 1911 mags in each, a Glock high cap or anything in between. Buy once, cry once.

I use the HSGI taco's as well, JC also has some solid recommendations. I currently use a fobus for my gun but would love to have a blade tech. Start with a 9mm, 45ACP is only good to throw at the target....extra weight and all I would say show up with just basic holster and mags and get a feel for how everyone uses their equipment.

I like Blade-Tech too. Well built and reasonably priced. If you have a blue steel blaster keep in mind Kydex holsters are hard on blue finishes. So if you have a revolver or pistol with a high lustre blue finish you'd be better off with a leather holster unless you don't mind having portions of your blue steel beauty "in the white" LOL. Most of the current crop of service pistols such as Glock, H&K, Springfield XD, SW M&P, SIG, Ruger, CZ, FN, Beretta etc all have finishes more durable and are OK with Kydex.
I'd stay away from the Blackhawk "Serpa" holsters. Those are the ones with a push button release on the body of the holster. There have been many negligent discharges attributed to that holster design and the major instructional shooting academies won't allow students to use them. Additionally, if dirt or sand gets inside the release mechanism it may seize up and you won't be able to get gun out of the holster.
Finally--don't skimp on the belt. Too many people get a great holster and hang it on some department store belt. The belt is just as important as the holster --it must be thick and rigid enough where it can support the weight of a service handgun without undue movement or drooping/sagging etc. Blade-Tech makes an excellent belt and I recommend it.
Good luck with your search and hope to see you at our monthly handgun shoots at Otto Rd Range!
