Is 40 MOA base to much for a 34mm tube?

I would stick to a 20moa base. With a 40moa, you may not be able to zero at 100yds.

Actually, it depends on how much travel there is in the scope. I put a 40 MOA Nightforce base on my .308 in order to reach 1000 yards with a 100 yard zero. The scope is a Leoupold VX-3, 6.5 - 20.

I wish I had 40 Moa on my tikka, I can't dial out to 1 mile, and really the whole zero thing just depends on how the scope sits on your gun. My beast has like 40 miles total travel and the way it sits on my gun with a 0 Mia base I only have 18 mils of travel. 40 more base means my scope would then have about 28 miles of travel, still not really using the whole range of the scope....just sayin.

I think you need to consider what ranges the majority of your targets wil be. While it would be great to dial up all the way put to a mile how often will you do that compared to say targets from 200 to 1,000. I have a 20 moa base, granted my longest shot to date has been 1250 yards, but again that was once, the majority of my targets are from 100 to 900 yards.

well a 100 yard zero is still a 100 yard zero with or without a 40 moa base, all your doing is adding capabilities to your rifle.

4 sure as it is now zero moa base i can only Dial 13 mils.I think i will take my shims out for the zero stop and see just how may mils i can come down. Then order a base i beleive i can come down 8 to 10 mils that would gain alot for me.Zeroed at 100 yrds and i have 1/16" to 1/8" of shims i can remove.
